Batmobile drives cancer fight

Batman will be cruising along Gotham and fighting the bad guys in style. Designer and builder Andy Smith who created the newest Batmobile, showed off the caped crusader’s hot wheels at the Electronic Arts studios in Burnaby to help raise money for cancer research earlier this week. “The Batmobile Tumbler was driven up from California on a flatbed truck uncovered and caused quite a commotion as it passed through the border,” said Smith. “Three years ago, I had my run in with cancer. I was diagnosed and the cancer agency fixed me. I thought now I’ve got a chance to give something back.”
Smith, along with a team of engineers, made the Batmobiles used for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Batman fans who donated to the B.C. Cancer Foundation scored a chance to see the car up close. Director Christopher Nolan likes realism in his films so Smith and his team built the Tumbler from scratch. It goes more than 175 kilometers per hour and is powered by a 350 Chevy engine. “It does everything you see it do,” said Smith. “We jumped it over the freeway. We blew it up in midair and it still drove back. We’ve driven it over police cars and thumped it through concrete walls.”
