Warner Bros. announced today that it will be releasing Christopher Nolan‘s epic conclusion to his Batman franchise, The Dark Knight Rises, on 15,000 screens outside of the United States starting July 20th; that’s a total of 4,000 more screens than The Dark Knight. The reason for this shouldn’t be all that surprising, as the Batman franchise has seen less impressive numbers abroad than other major franchises — whereas blockbuster franchises such as Harry Potter and The Avengers traditionally accumulate a larger stream of revenue from international audiences (The Avengers made $600k domestically and almost $850k internationally, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 made $380k domestically and a whopping $950k internationally), The Dark Knight earned $530k domestically and a disappointing $470k internationally. In a post-Avengers summer, Warner Bros. needs as much revenue coming from outside the U.S. as possible. Coupling that with their recent announcement that The Dark Knight Rises will be a massive 2 hours, 44 minutes and 27 seconds (which means less screenings will be possible per day), Warner Bros. has a long road ahead of them if they want to take down Joss Whedon‘s juggernaut.
