If you caught The Dark Knight Rises trailer before The Avengers this weekend (and judging by its record-breaking box office—you did) and found Tom Hardy’s menacing Bane difficult to understand, Hardy is telling you to have some patience. The Inception star spoke out about criticisms for the first time in an interview with Entertainment Weekly recently and the British bad boy says the voice will make more sense when put in context. In December, when the first preview for the Batman finale premiered in front of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, fans voiced concerns that Bane’s peculiar voice made him almost inaudible. However, Hardy says the voice is the result of an exceptional effort to develop a distinctive speech representing the hulking super villain’s Latin heritage. “There were two doors we could walk through,” Hardy said. “We could play a very straightforward villain or we could go through this very quirky door, which is totally justified by the text but may seem very, very stupid. As the film progresses, I think you’ll be able to tune to its setting.”
