This takes viral marketing to a whole new level. What appeared to be a simple piece of online promotion turned into a full-blown fan frenzy as the caped crusader’s adoring fans were asked to assist in a real-life mission to find The Dark Knight. On Monday, a fictional police report was posted on the official website for The Dark Knight Rises. The report requested the public’s help in capturing the masked vigilante and featured a list of various addresses worldwide. Fans didn’t have to be asked twice, immediately traveling to the addresses in search of Batman logos to take photos of and send to an email address masquerading as the “Gotham Police Department.” What participants were looking to find wasn’t their favorite superhero however, but an advanced peek at the new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, set to premiere in front of the Avengers on May 4. Fans were successful as the trailer was released yesterday.
